As a boat owner, you know all about the winterization process your trusty vessel endures before you stash it away for those chilly Wisconsin months. But here’s what a lot of people don’t realize: Getting it back out is just as much work and attention, maybe even more, before you approach the water again.
All boats need a little extra care after being at rest in a storage place for several months. I know you just want to get back out on the Great Lakes, but checking your boat over carefully now will guarantee that it’s ship shape and doesn’t require any costly unforeseen repairs or service in weeks to come.
Prepare Your Engine for the 2026 Season
Start with your batteries. See if they need to be charged or replaced entirely. And when you do get your batteries in order, fill that tank with fresh juice and fire up de ol’ motor. Note how it sounds to you. You’re playing in search of sound that is alternative, rougher, heavier than what you are accustomed to hearing.
If you didn’t change the oil or filters when you put your boat away last fall, do it now. New oil that will keep your boat running for an entire season.
Check for Corrosion
Look over all your boat’s electrical connections and hardware. Corrosion can set in when your boat’s sitting in storage during those cold winter months. If you find corrosion, get damage professionally inspected before using the boat on the water.
Your hoses and cables should not be left out. They can get brittle and corroded after sitting around for so long. Inspect all these components closely, too.
Ensure Propellers Are Functioning Correctly
An important part of pulling your boat out of storage is to ensure that those propellers are in tiptop condition. Spot any dents or cracks, and be sure they’re not bent. Out-of-shape props can also damage other components on your boat, necessitating expensive and time-consuming repairs.
Clean the Boat Thoroughly
Dig out all your cleaning gear and make that hull shine again. Your boat has been in storage for months, it’s bound to be dirty. Dust, dirt and moisture accumulate, as well. And when you’re sure everything is functioning properly and all parts in good order, then why not wash inside and outside your boat to restore it to its former glory. Regular cleaning will also help protect the surface of your boat and keep its interior in good condition.
